Position: Apprentice Sea Kayak Award (working internship)

Description:
This position is designed for individuals to gain experience and develop their skills as a sea kayaker. It is an excellent opportunity to learn and practice technical sea kayaking/SUP skills, guiding skills, gain confidence in being a leader, and become a sound decision maker. A Sicily in kayak Sea kayak Award Apprentice will gain experience and develop their skills under the guidance of some of the industry’s highest qualified and experienced head sea kayak guide.
Sicily in Kayak has a program to off-set the price of 4 weeks internship. A Sea Kayak/SUP apprentice can apply for a working internship with Sicily in Kayak. This internship gives the apprentice the opportunity to work and learn at the sea kayaking center for a period of 4 weeks, this formula will cover the fees owed by the apprentice for his/her internship. At the end of the internship period it will be possible for the apprentice, if he so wishes, to be integrated (salaried) in the Sicily in kayak technical team for the following months, see Sea Kayak/SUP Guide.
Skills required:
- a B.C. 1 Sea Star or equivalent (E.P.P.1)
- EU citizenship (or valid work visa for Sicilia)
- very good spoken English (Italian is a HUGE plus)
- availability for the 4 weeks
- a very safety-conscious attitude
- a friendly, outgoing personality and a passion for helping people of all ages and backgrounds.
Sicily in kayak will provide with :
- Accommodation in Vulcano Is. (to share possibly with the Sea Kayak Guide) for the 4 weeks
- Sea kayak, paddle, buoyancy aid, spray skirt available 6 days a week for the 4 weeks
- Full training B.C. Sea Kayak Award 6 days a week for the 4 weeks
- At the price of Euro 500 for the 4 weeks

Opportunity:
6 days a week for the 4 weeks
- A Sicily in kayak sea kayak/SUP Apprentice may get the opportunity to assist Half or Full day excursions on Vulcano, Lipari and Salina islands.
-A Sicily in kayak Sea kayak/SUP Apprentice may get the opportunity to assist on multi-day trips.
-Learn to be responsible for safety and risk management on the trip.
-Full training B.C. Sea Kayak Award
Duties and responsibilities:
(+ o - 3h per day, 6 day per week):
-Keep the sea kayak centre and the common areas with the guides, including the kitchen and bathroom at the nautical base clean and ordered.
-Keep all the equipment (Sea Kayak/SUP/Sail boat) wash, dry, order and clean.
-Help with the quality control of equipment.
-Take appropriate action to promote and sell sea kayaking/SUP in Vulcano and Lipari
Sea Kayak/SUP Guiding is a Profession:
Our client’s expect that their Guide/s have the necessary training and experience to make the right decisions at all times. It is therefore that we at Sicily in Kayak are committed to the education and the training of Sea Kayak/SUP apprentice. During the course of an internship, Guide Interns will gain both the knowledge and practical experience required to lead sea kayakers safely and competently. A Sicily in Kayak Apprentice Internship is a great opportunity to gain firsthand insight into the life of a Sea Kayak Guide; working as an Apprentice Intern is a great introduction to the rigors of a career in the outdoor industry of Sea Kayaking and a great way for an individual to start working towards becoming a Guide.
Information:
Sicily in kayak has put together a 4 week Apprentice training program. It is aimed at intermediate paddlers wanting to work in the industry. At the end of the course you will have the experience (no qualifications) to run safe, enjoyable and informative trips in a variety of conditions. We will base the course in and out of Vulcano using the variety of locations in the local area to develop your guiding skills. You will receive, for the duration of the internship, the complete set of guide kits for which you will be responsible (Kayak, paddle, buoyancy aid, spray skirt) to ensure you are ready for working in the industry.
Certification Sea Kayak award:
In Italy, on Elba island (Tuscany) the British Canoeing “Sea Kayak award” Certificate can be issued by the British Canoeing provider Giuseppe Debernardi once the skills required by the certification have been achieved. For Apprentices who carry out 3 months of work with Sicily in kayak after the 4 weeks of internship, the cost of the certification will be offered by Sicily in kayak, with Giuseppe Debernardi at his kayak base in Tuscany and on the dates agreed with him.
Your Sea Kayak Award gives you the skills and ability to have a safe, fun day out on the sea. It will give you the correct decision-making and personal skills with which you can plan an enjoyable and successful journey on the sea.
You will look at the key environmental factors that will influence your decisions on where to paddle. Together, you and your Coach will work on getting you confident to paddle in winds up to force 3, tides up to 1 knot and in tidal or non-tidal environments. This award can be taken in a sea kayak or a sit on top kayak.
During this award you will look at how to keep yourself safe on the water by choosing the correct equipment and by having the rescue skills required to ensure that you, and anyone that you are paddling with, are safe. You and your Coach will work on the key paddling techniques that you will need to keep control of your craft whilst on the water. This includes forward paddling, negotiating confined spaces, maintaining or changing direction and moving sideways.
After each session you will assess what went well and areas to work on. You and your Coach will discuss where you can go to gain other information to support your learning, such as watching other paddlers.
Each day we spend sea kayaking further expands our skills and knowledge, creating a more enjoyable experience on the water. With no two trip experiences ever the same, we never stop learning. Continually evaluating the choices we make creates a natural evolution of decision making and sea paddling ability.
COURSE CONTENT
During this award you will develop your skill, judgement and decision making to enable you to plan a successful trip on the sea. You will look at the key decisions needed to ensure you are in the right place at the right time. Key paddling and rescue skills will be developed. You will also learn how to choose the right paddling and safety equipment for your trip.
COURSE ASSESSMENT
The Sea Kayak Award has no formal assessment. Each day you spend kayaking will further expand your skills and knowledge, leading to a more enjoyable experience on the water. You and your Coach will tailor the award around your needs.

The following is an overview of the process we use for selecting our Sea Kayak/SUP Apprentice:
Step 1 – Initial applicant CV review (Level of sea kayak – Sea kayak/SUP guiding experience (if you have)
Step 2 – Interview (via whatsapp with live video)
Step 3 – Offer of a Sea Kayak/SUP apprentice position to successful applicant/s.
Applicants who do not have access with live video will not be considered for a position.
Please note: Sicily in kayak receives many more applications each year than we have positions to fill. It is to your advantage to submit your application as soon as possible.
In the event that an Sea Kayak/SUP apprentice is granted they will be expected to provide security to ensure that they in fact will complete the full 4 week.
